Alcohol in your body
In case you did not take the final exam in Biology – or if your knowledge on biology has become a little vague during the vacation period – we’ve added a short course to refresh the effects of alcohol in your body below.
When you drink beer, the alcohol reaches your blood through the stomach and the intestines. Within 10 minutes, the alcohol reaches your brain as well. Meanwhile, the liver starts working, because alcohol is toxic to the body and needs to be broken down. The enzymes which break down the alcohol in the liver take about one and a half hour per glass of alcohol (beer, wine or liquor) to do so. This process cannot be accelerated, not even with fresh air or strong coffee. This is not a problem as long as you drink 1 to 2 glasses of alcohol per day. That way, your body can break down the alcohol relatively easily and mostly without negative consequences.
When you drink more alcohol, You can experience a hangover the next day. A hangover means you will feel weak, tired and nauseous. This could result in throwing up and having a headache. The most important cause of the hangover is the loss of fluid. Alcohol makes you pee more than you drink, which dries out your body.
Do not drink too much alcohol!
When you drink lots of alcohol for a longer period of time, this could cause damage to your body. You can read more about this here (in Dutch).
Taste alcohol-free beer like a pro
Have you ever tasted alcohol-free beer? Here, we explain how you can taste alcohol-free beer like a professional.
Before tasting, you will look and sniff first. The tasting sheet helps you describing the looks, smells and the flavors you discover. Beer-tasting follows three steps.
Take the time to examine the looks of your beer. What do you see? What is the color of the beer? Do you see lots of foam or little to no foam? Is the beer clear or cloudy?
Smell the beer with short sniffs. The smell provides a good indication for the taste of the beer. What do you smell? Is it fruit, herbs or grain? Did you know that your nose is responsible for approximately 80% of the taste?
Take a big sip, keep the beer in your mouth for a moment, then swallow and smack a few times. What do you taste? Is the beer sweet, sour or bitter? Do you taste the carbonic acid?
Congratulations: you have now tasted alcohol-free beer like a pro. Did you like it?
There are a lot of different types of alcohol-free beer, so there is plenty of choice!
About this campaign
Over 70 organizations tackle societal problems like smoking, obesity and excessive alcohol consumption together in the National Prevention Agreement. Reducing excessive alcohol consumption among students is part of this consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption must become less common within student life. Dutch beer breweries support the reduction of alcohol abuse among students by making non-alcoholic beer available at student associatons and by creating awareness among students that non-alcoholic beer is a good alternative to alcoholic beer.
